The lady conducting the Basics of Cake baking class at Bloomsburg had a great piece of advice - Don't go and buy every shaped pan for the intended shape. You are just going to fill your pantry apart from getting a hole in your pocket. She had some great tips for various shapes. Just buy the basic shapes. A round pan, a Square one, and A rectangle one is a good start.| pardon the mess. A closeup of Butterfly cake from a round pan |
For the butterfly cake, I baked the cake in a round pan. After cooling it down and removing the round cake, I cut it into 2 halves. Turn the 2 pieces around and stick it at the curve. (When I say 'stick', place it next to each other touching at their middle curves and apply some icing to their sides where they touch , so they kind of 'stick'.) Carve out the wedges a bit and here is a beautiful butterfly cake!
My son wanted a car cake for his birthday and green being his favorite color, I made a green icing and mixed in some powdered Oreo for a tough look. I also used powdered Oreo for gravel to place the car on and whole Oreo for car wheels. I used a rectangle shaped pan to bake the cake. Once cooled, I carved out a bit in the front and the back (pretty clear as shown in the pic about how to carve).
My next project would probably be a train if my son is still interested in Thomas and other trains :)
